Andy was part of a small team who rediscovered this secluded corner of Pakistan’s Karakoram. He and his three partners were the first people to go there since the original explorer, Eric Shipton, in 1938. For six weeks they based at this meadow, and nearly made the first ascent of the greatest rock tower in the vicinity, which they’d named Shipton Spire. The spires in this image rise 5-6,000 feet right above the meadow, and the team labeled the narrow ones on the right with local Balti words, Bila Sna--“cat’s ears”. Near the end of their time there, as the meadow turned to autumn, a storm blew in, and then came a moment when weak sunlight shone on the spires. Andy raced to put on his widest lens and just in time captured an image that magically balances heaven and earth, ethereal light and solid form.
